About the concept of Simon Go photo
shooting:::
In the eyes of Simon Go, the value of photos, is not about what skill had been used, it is about the idea that people can reflect on, and also, aftertaste. It also witnessed the change in terms of his own photography.
"The "beautiful photo" and "good photo" are completely different things, "beautiful photo" will make you feel great by a glimpse glance and will make you think it is beautiful, skill used is high, but a few hours or a few days after you will lose the memory. But the "good photo" will be memorable and will recall the past repeatedly.I had an obsession that each photo should have their own Style, and was also very concerned about the comments of others, but since the start shooting "Orchestration - Hong Kong Old Shops'', I found that I does not require to be too obsessed, shooting is enjoyable .From having conversationa with the shop owners and employees , I can shoot photograph that reflect more. "
~~~~~~~
"I shot the old shop not because I want to nostalgic them, instead I want to express the emotion of the people who care about them. Photography is not just lift the digital camera and " Cha Cha Cha "for a few photos. When Simon Go shoot as a documentary photography, he believes that behind this type of photo, it must have wanted to express the meaning of those photos.And the meaning should be inspiring, be educational and can express social problems and also people. Photo must have something to inspire us.
~~~~~~~
I believe photographers should leave space for people to tell the stories themselves and not dominate a scene, I kept this in mind when i was taking photos of cage homes and old shops.
~~~~~~~
I believe that the 1989 "June Fourth Incident" influenced me more than I thought. I was still studying in Polytechnic school. I believe that people who witnessed the incident will re-understanding their own. I am not referring to the shock of the event itself, but is the views and opinion that the incident bring to you .This view is very simple,you just always need to care about the relationship between man and society. I reach out to the community,and began to photography , I am not going to put the community away from my photos . I never see my photography as an art form, all these years, I just want to record things happening in somewhere Hong Kong in an particular era or a particular period. And the record is not only a pure direct record (Straight Record), also includes my own opinion of the time and the moment.
~~~~~~~
Look
at my shooting target, everyone's life is very difficult, and can also adhere
to live with dignity, to bring the important message: it does not a matter to
live in poor , but it is more important to live with dignity, to have a passion
for life. This is not what I want to say to speak, I think, but I feel that
they are brought to my this message.
I think what I collected contains very interesting cultures, I hope to save these cultures, in fact, there are not too many people in Hong Kong for many years to do this type of data collecting program. I tried to keep some things which are worth preserving with all my ability, in my spare time, and I want my children to see how's Hong Kong looked like in the past , and make them believe.
My opinion:::
What I really appreciate about Simon Go
is that, how he make use of his artwork. Art is not only about one person, art
will become meaningful only when it related to people or society. Art is not a
way to express one emotion, but has its own meaning and message which lead
re-understanding. In Simon Go's photo, I can always feel the passion of him
towards own local culture. He was willing to spend long time to know,
understand, and feel the real culture of what he want to shoot. It may be easy
for him to shoot beautiful photos, but as what he said, he want to shoot ''good
photo'' rather than '' beautiful photos''. I think he did this , because after
years , we can still understand the old faded culture of Hong Kong by looking
at his photos, and remember how people loved their past.
I believe photographs are very different from other genres of artwork. For me, photographs are ideally recording facts and the moment you have with other people. Just like we take photos during big events like graduation, wedding and birthdays.
回覆刪除I am more into conceptual type of artwork, so photographs may not be the best way for me to express my feeling or the message I would like to bring out. It is quite interesting that you are actually looking into what he is trying to do with the photographs, can you explain more in details?
Thank you for your comments...=]And I may briefly give some more details here.....Simon Go 's photos are being called artworks because he is not JUST recording...He did research and preparation before taking the shoots..For example he spent about 6 years for research and talking to the target before shooting the serious of ''Cageman''..What he want to present in his artworks is not just 'THAT MOMENT',, but also, the emotion /story behind....and sorry for creating this confusion because I planned to post information and my opinion towards them ...And left the in-depth analyse in my final presentation...Once again thanks for your question..!
回覆刪除That's really interesting! And I really enjoyed your presentation last week! very thoughtful and I know more about how artists use photographs to express meaning!

回覆刪除the photography shows the old history of Hong Kong's society. These photos can be passed to our offsprings showing what we have experienced and lived before in order to pass the flame to our next generation.

回覆刪除I like Simon Go’s definition of “beautiful photo” and “good photo”! I like taking photos too. And I like capturing every happy moment as when I see the photos in the future, say after 10 years, it will bring me precious memories.^^ Do you like taking photos? Through his artworks we can know more about the old Hong Kong. His photographs may inspire many Hong Kong citizens, especially the middle-aged one. Does he have any background that makes him like shooting documentary photographs or did he make any references to other photographers?
No matter how many preparations has a photographer done before a shooting, it just take less than a second to make a shoot. And photographers need to move people and make them think about the meaning reflected from the photo. I think this is very hard, but Simon Go really did a good job.
回覆刪除And there is a question I want to ask. According to Simon Go, the ‘beautiful photo’ and ‘good photo’ are completely different things. And what I want to ask is that can a ‘beautiful photo’ be a ‘good photo’ at the same time? Or they are just totally opposite?
